Edward Skloot served five years, until July 2013, as founding director of the Center for Strategic Philanthropy and Civil Society at the Sanford School of Public Policy of Duke University. He assumed the position after retiring (after 18 years) as first President of the Surdna Foundation, a $1billion family foundation based in New York City. Before Surdna, Skloot was founder and President of New Ventures, a consulting firm that assisted other nonprofits in earning income, an early venture in the creation of the field of social entrepreneurship. Earlier, he served in senior posts in the governments of NYC and NYS. Currently, Skloot serves on the boards of Venture Philanthropy Partners, Citizen Schools, Duke Engage, Partners for Palliative Care and TROSA, the largest social enterprise in NC. He has spoken and written often on issues in the social sector and his most recent edited book is Scaling Social Impact: New Thinking (Palgrave-MacMillan, 2010).
