Biography

For the past 15 years, Maritza Arroyo has been building comprehensive initiatives to raise equity for children and families. She was recently appointed as Assistant Commissioner for Direct Services at the NYC Department for the Aging. As Assistant Commissioner, Ms. Arroyo manages federal and state grants and city tax levy-funded direct service programs – Senior Employment – Title V, Foster Grandparent, Grandparent Resource Center, Elderly Crime Victims Resource Center, Elder Abuse, Social Adult Day Care (SADC)/Ombudsman, HICAP, Bill Payer, and DFTA My Ride – with a staff of about 50 – and works with various stakeholders, internally and externally, to devise methodology to enhance service delivery to diverse older adults citywide.

Prior to her appointment, Ms. Arroyo provided consulting services, was Vice President of Education at United Way of New York City where she led the educational practice and policy on student success in high poverty schools, was the CEO of the Promise neighborhood grantee Zone 126 where she led a Cradle to Career strategy, and was the Executive Director of the national organization BELL Excel – previously Building Educated Leaders for Life – where she led high-quality after-school and evidence-based summer programs. During the lifespan of her career, she has supported over 90,000 children and families and has raised over $70 million.

Ms. Arroyo is a graduate of Hofstra University and received an Executive Leadership certificate from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. In 2014, she was selected to the inaugural cohort of the Presidio Institute/White House Cross Sector Fellowship, In 2015 she was selected as a Ricardo Salinas Scholar at the Aspen Institute and in 2016 appointed to the NYC Children’s cabinet Advisory Board. She is a former Board Member of the Community Educational Council District #30 and is currently a Board Member of the Girls Scouts of Nassau County, as well as an Advisor to nonprofits via the Taproot Foundation.
